Introduction of Head of Department:

Prof. Dr. Shafiq Ur Rehman Cheema is a distinguished nephrologist serving as Professor and Head of the Nephrology Department at Jinnah Hospital, Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore. After graduating as the Most Distinguished Graduate from King Edward Medical College, he pursued advanced training in the United States, completing his residency in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital and fellowships in Nephrology and Transplant Nephrology at Westchester Medical Center, New York Medical College, Valhalla.
His exemplary performance in the U.S. earned him recognition as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and of the American Society of Nephrology (FASN), as well as board certifications in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He was honored among America’s Top Physicians in both 2008 and 2011.
Over his 23+ years of professional experience, Dr. Cheema has held key leadership roles including Medical Director at Fresenius Medical Care, President of Hope Kidney Clinic (Texas), and Chief of Medicine at Laredo Medical Center. Despite a celebrated career in the U.S., he chose to return to Pakistan to lead the Department of Nephrology at Jinnah Hospital, bringing world-renowned expertise to serve and uplift local patient care.

GOAL & OBJECTIVES:

The Department of Nephrology at Allama Iqbal Medical College / Jinnah Hospital Lahore aims to lead nationally in kidney research, education, and patient care. Our objective is to provide high-quality, ethical, and evidence-based treatment for kidney diseases while training the next generation of nephrologists. We are committed to advancing research, promoting early detection and prevention, and raising community awareness. By enhancing dialysis, transplant services, and clinical infrastructure, we strive to improve kidney health outcomes across the region.

The Nephrology Department at Jinnah Hospital Lahore is a leading center for renal care, education, and research. We are dedicated to training the next generation of nephrologists through our rigorous FCPS and MD Nephrology programs, ensuring they acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for excellence in the field.

Our department is equipped with cutting-edge facilities, including two advanced dialysis units with a total of 43 beds, operating three shifts daily, alongside 24/7 emergency dialysis services. The Nephrology Ward provides comprehensive coverage across the hospital, delivering specialized care for patients requiring hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and renal transplant services. Additionally, our outpatient nephrology clinic offers expert management for a wide range of kidney-related disorders.

We specialize in key nephrology procedures, including temporary and permanent hemodialysis catheter insertion as well as renal biopsies. With a strong emphasis on patient-centered care, education, and research, we are committed to advancing nephrology practice and providing an exceptional training environment for medical professionals.

Under the distinguished leadership of Prof. Dr. Shafiq Cheema, our department upholds the highest standards of clinical excellence, academic rigor, and compassionate patient care.

  • Fellowship Program: The Department of Nephrology, Jinnah Hospital Lahore is recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan for FCPS and UHS for MD training. Currently 16 residents are under training in our prestigious department.
  • Academics & Research: Formal presentations, Journal clubs, grand rounds, research methodology and updated guidelines are discussed on a regular basis.
  • House Job: Our department also offers 3 months rotation for house job.
  • Cutting Edge: Our department is leading in the race to bring state of the art, innovative and advanced technology to the community.
  • Kidney Dialysis & Transplantion:We have a 50 stationed dialysis unit, an actively running peritoneal dialysis program, pre- and post- renal transplant services, PHOTA approved active kidney transplantation program, thrice weekly outpatient services, and in-patient consultation.
  • Renal Biopsy & HD catheter Placement: We also provide in-patient dialysis, perform renal biopsies and place dialysis catheters on a daily basis.
