Prof. Tarar did his MBBS in 1985 from King Edward Medical College, Lahore, his FRCS from England in 1990 and completed higher surgical training in Plastic Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1994.  He joined as an Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery in April 1995 at Allama Iqbal Medical College affiliated with Jinnah Hospital, Lahore. He conceived, planned and executed a mega project in Health Sector in the form of Jinnah Burn & Reconstructive Surgery Centre (JB&RSC), Lahore at Allama Iqbal Medical College.  Currently, he has been working as a Professor and Head of Plastic Surgery Department AIMC/JHL and founder Executive Director of JB&RSC.

The College of Physicians & Surgeons of Pakistan bestowed on him honorary Fellowship in Plastic Surgery in recognition of his academic contributions and achievements in 2010. He was awarded SITARA-E-IMTIAZ by the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan for meritorious public service in 2014. He has trained more than 60 trainees in FCPS & MS in Plastic Surgery, the highest number of plastic surgeons trained by anyone in the country. He is examiner of FCPS and MS in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan, University of Health Sciences, University of the Punjab, King Edward Medical University, and Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University, Islamabad. He is Dean of faculty of Plastic Surgery at the College of Physician and Surgeons of Pakistan. He is Chairman of the Specialist Advisory Committee of Plastic Surgery at the University of Health Sciences.

He is past President of Pakistan Association of Plastic Surgeons (PAPS). Currently, he is President of Pakistan Burn Association (PBA) and National Secretary of International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS). Prof. Tarar has been invited as Key Note Speaker at the National Societies of Plastic Surgeons of the U.K. and Italy.  He is a regular invited faculty of Advance Training Courses in Limb Reconstruction arranged by the British Association of Aesthetic, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons (BAPRAS) and Reconstructive Microsurgery Courses by the Italian Microsurgery Society. He is founder Course Director of JB&RSC / JHL Reconstructive Microsurgery & Burn Courses, accredited by BAPRAS and Royal College of Surgeons of England (UK) for CME.  He has been spear heading charity missions for cleft lip / palate and burn victims in Gilgit-Baltistan since 2009 on annual basis.

Prof. Moazzam Tarar was appointed Focal Person for training in Plastic Surgery & Burns by Health Department Punjab in 2008, as Chairman of Committee for revamping of Acute Burn Services in Punjab by the Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department in 2017.  He is now steering Nayee Zindagi Program, a project of Government of the Punjab, Punjab Social Protection Authority under Ehsaas Program, Government of Pakistan. He has more than 80 research publications in international and national medical journals and contributing author in following books:

  • Oxford Textbook of Plastic Surgery, Oxford University Press, U.K.
  • Clinical Application of Stem Cells, Vertag Berlin, Germany.
  • Handbook of Infection Control & Prevention, University of Health Sciences, Lahore.

A state of the art Jinnah Burn & Reconstructive Surgery Centre (JB&RSC) is an important milestone towards the initiatives of the Government of the Punjab.  This is one of the largest well equipped, modern healthcare facilities in the public sector with a bed capacity of 78, commissioned in November 2014.  It provides specialized treatment facility to major burn patients.  The centre also provides limb replant services, post cancer ablative reconstruction and microsurgery services. JB&RSC has a modern ICU facility for burn victims, modular operation theatres and skin bank. We have our own dedicated Pathology Lab, Radiology and Physiotherapy Departments. We have total number of 387 employees including doctors, nurses, allied health services and ministerial staff etc. JB&RSC is a nerve centre to develop SOPs and treatment protocols for the management of acute burn victims in other burn centres across the province.  It is also providing training in reconstructive and micro-vascular surgery skills to postgraduate students.

The Centre has its state of the art research laboratory in collaboration with Centre of Excellence in Microbiology (CEMB), University of the Punjab which is working on Stem Cells and Karatinocytes. This laboratory has recently developed Acellular Dermis to be used as skin substitute in burn and trauma patients. Annually, approximately a number of 31000 patients are seen in Out Patient Department (OPD), and major surgeries performed 3000 yearly in the centre.

  • Acute Burn Management with ICU Care including provision of Skin Allografts is available.
  • Services for reconstruction of burn related complications including rehabilitation, occupational therapy and scar management are offered.
  • Reconstructive Surgery for Traumatic and Congenital Deformities is done.
  • Tumor board and multidisciplinary management of cancer patients including resection, reconstruction and rehabilitation are provided.
  • Microsurgery and limb replantation service is available.
  • Training in Burn Management and Reconstructive Microsurgery is provided.
  • The research in Stem Cell and Genetic Diseases is conducted here.
  • The department has largest number of plastic & reconstructive surgeons trained (greater than 60) in the country.
  • It is the first and the only Skin Bank in Pakistan.
  • It is the largest Limb Replantation Centre of the Country.
  • Stem Cell & Genetic Diseases Research Lab are established with GMP facility first time in the country.
  • It offers largest number of reconstructive microsurgery services in the country.
