HEAD OF DEPARTMENT OF DERMATOLOGY (UNIT II)

Dermatology Unit II is headed by Prof. Dr. Azim Jahangir Khan. He is Board Certified by American Board of Internal Medicine and American Board of Dermatology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Liposuction Surgery, American Society for Laser Surgery, American Society for Hair Restoration Surgery and American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. In addition to Internal Medicine and Dermatology residencies from Cook County Hospital and State University of New York at Stony Brook (SUNY) respectively, he has been formally trained in wound healing fellowship from Northwestern University in Chicago and is trained in Cosmetic Surgery fellowship accredited by American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. He is the fellowship program director of American Society for Dermatologic Surgery International fellowship program accredited at the Institute Cosmetique in Pakistan and this program is one of the 4 international accredited sites formally approved by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery for the training in the subspecialties of dermatologic and cosmetic surgery under its auspices. He has written book chapters in internationally recognized textbooks, has extensively published in clinical as well as basic sciences arena in internationally recognized journals and has presented at innumerable national and international meetings. He is the supervisor of College of Physicians and Surgeons as well.

Department of Dermatology Unit II sees about 100-150 patients daily on its out-patient days and provide all the essential treatments as well as diagnostic biopsies for difficult cases referred from across Pakistan and many patients are formally referred from Shaukat Khanum Hospital for cutaneous malignancies’ evaluation and treatment as well as for chemotherapy induced cutaneous disorders. Department caters some of the sickest patients in dermatology including TEN, SJS and Pemphigus to name a few on its in-patient service and treatment of Pemphigus is routinely performed using the cutting edge medicines like Rituximab with survival rate rivaling the best centers in the world. Similarly, many patients having complex autoimmune, genetic and collagen vascular disorders like Epidermolysis Bullosa, Xeroderma Pigmentosum are cutaneous lupus etyhthematosis and scleroderma are referred from all over Pakistan for complex case management as well as genetic studies and diagnosis of genetic cutaneous disorders..

  • With the department’s collaborations with internationally recognized genetic testing labs, philanthropic support of Bait-ul-Maal and private individuals and above all with the help of its own self support, these diagnostic tests and treatments are being made available regularly.
  • The department is responsible for conducting lectures and engaging students in objective oriented discussions and tutorials.
  • Encouraging student participation and enhancing their soft skills via regular presentations tasks while enabling them to acquire practical skills via practical Labs. Regular assessments are made via written tests and verbal examinations.
