The Department of Ophthalmology is one the noteworthy teaching departments of Allama Iqbal Medical College at Jinnah Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan. Allama Iqbal Medical College is second on open merit in the province of The Punjab. There are two units working in a team mode. Prof Hamid Mahmood Butt is the Head of Unit -1 and Chairman of the Student Affairs Committee while Prof Nadeem Hafeez Butt is in charge of Eye Unit-2 and Director of Medical Education, Allama Iqbal Medical College. Both the Professors are qualified Medical Educationists and it is a unique privilege for the institution and students alike.
The department is recognized for undergraduate teaching by the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore and accredited for postgraduate training for PMDC Level-3 specialist certification in Ophthalmology by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan ( CPSP) leading to FCPS and by the UHS leading to MS. It is also recognized for PMDC Level-4 Fellowship FCPS Vitreoretinal Surgery. There is an active departmental teaching program for both under and postgraduate teaching based on Principles of Adult Learning. Student interaction is encouraged both in small and large group teaching. There is a modular training program tailored to the local educational context. Work based assessment tools are used for structured teaching and training. We are hopeful to progress in the right direction under an agile and competent leadership of our diligent professors.
- There is a 40-bed indoor facility, a dedicated outpatients and operating room sections.
- It is fully equipped with a dedicated Diagnostic Suite having facilities for Biometry, Autorefraction, Automated visual field analyzer, OCT, FFA and Argon and YAG lasers.
- The operating theatre is fully equipped both for anterior and posterior segment surgery. There is a rapid patient turnover owing to customized day care surgery depending on patient need. Team work and collaborative learning is the basic motivation of the department for teaching and training of the future doctors and eye specialists for better patient care.
