The department of Anatomy is one of the basic department of Medical profession. Anatomy is taught in first and second years of MBBS.  Anatomy is the “Mother” of all medical sciences and a “Sine quanon” basic science, is the foundation of medical knowledge. The department teaches this fascinating subject to about 800 students including 1st and 2nd year students of MBBS, DPT, MLT & BSc Nursing in the elementary years of their training.

The domain of Anatomy includes General Anatomy, Microscopic Anatomy, Developmental Anatomy, Gross Anatomy and Neuroanatomy. The department offers a modern up to date integrated curriculum. The teaching hours of different disciplines are in accordance with the recommended specifications provided by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. Our teaching methodology includes lectures, group discussions (demonstrations), dissection of cadavers, and study of tissue microstructure in histology lab.

The faculty of Anatomy Department is both qualified & experienced. Most of the demonstrators have done/ are doing their post-graduation, not only in the subject but also in clinical sciences. This multidisciplinary knowledge imparts better skills to the teacher to teach students in a better way.

Engaging students in various educational activities make learning anatomy effective and more interactive. Here are several educational activities which are imparting knowledge to the students in the field of anatomy.

Dissection Labs:

  • Purpose: Hands-on exploration of human or animal specimens.
  • Details: Students can learn about the structure and organization of different body parts by directly handling and dissecting cadavers or anatomical models.

Cadaver Prosection:

  • Purpose: Demonstrative learning.
  • Details: Instructors or advanced students prepare specific dissections (prosections) for teaching purposes, allowing students to see detailed anatomical structures without performing the dissection themselves.

Anatomy Drawing and Sketching:

  • Purpose: Enhancing memory retention.
  • Details: Students draw and label different anatomical structures, which can help in better retention and understanding of the material.

Histology Labs

  • Purpose: Microscopic anatomy study.
  • Details: Examining tissues under the microscope to understand the microanatomy of different organs and systems.

Anatomy Museum:

  • Purpose:  Self-paced learning.
  • Details: Visible Body offer detailed, interactive anatomical models for study and practice.

Peer Teaching and Group Work

  • Purpose: Collaborative learning.
  • Details: Students work in groups to teach each other anatomical concepts, which promotes active learning and reinforces their knowledge.

Anatomy Lab Practical Exams

  • Purpose: Assessing hands-on skills.
  • Details: Practical exams where students identify structures on cadavers, models, or images, testing their hands-on knowledge

Interactive Lectures and Seminars:

  • Purpose: Learning from experts.
  • Details: Inviting specialists from various medical fields to talk about the practical applications of anatomical knowledge

Field Trips:

  • Purpose: Exposure to real-world applications.
  • Details: Visits to hospitals, museums, or anatomical research centers to see the application of anatomical knowledge

Problem-Based Learning (PBL)

  • Purpose: Developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Details: Students work in groups to solve complex anatomical problems or case studies, guided by a facilitator

Self-Directed Learning:

  • Purpose: Self-paced learning.
  • Details: Books, Online resources, tutorials and modules that students can use to learn and test their knowledge at their own pace.

World Anatomy Day Competition:

  • Purpose: a tradition introduced to blend learning with student’s extracurricular talents.
  • Details: Every year on World Anatomy Day a quiz/ model / poster competition is arranged to enhance student’s natural talents and to emphasize importance of Anatomy in their teaching.

Research activities in the Department of Anatomy typically encompass a wide range of topics related to the structure and function of biological organisms.

  • Neuroanatomy: This area focuses on the structure of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Research may involve mapping neural pathways, studying brain regions, and understanding neural function.
  • Histology: Researchers use various staining techniques and microscopy methods to study the structure and function of different tissue types.
  • Functional Morphology: This area examines how anatomical structures are related to their function. Researchers might investigate how muscle structure relates to movement or how the shape of bones influences mechanical strength. Various studies are conducted in the anatomy department by the faculty and also in collaboration with the students.
  • Clinical Anatomy: Research in clinical anatomy often focuses on practical applications of anatomical knowledge in medicine. This can include studies on surgical techniques, anatomical variations, and the development of medical imaging techniques.
  • Anatomical Education: Research in this area focuses on improving the methods and materials used to teach anatomy. This can include developing new educational technologies, assessing teaching methods, and creating educational resources.
  • Anatomy department also facilitate other sister institutions in collecting data for research purpose after fulfilling all codal formalities.
  • Anatomy department also facilitate international conferences of surgery, anesthesia, ENT, Orthopedics and plastic surgery domains by providing expertise and logistics.
